FAMU DRS and FAMU’s School of Nursing Presents... Vision & Hearing Screenings

September 25th Vision & Hearing Screenings CANCELED -----
----- -----

FAMU DRS is collaborating with the FAMU School of Nursing for our annual vision and hearing screenings. We would like to offer an opportunity for parents to bring their students to the school for these screeners. Vision and hearing screenings are not only required by the state of Florida, but also very important in early diagnosis of potential barriers in a student’s ability to learn and grow!
If you have a student in the designated grade levels listed below, and you would like for your child to be screened, please adhere to the following procedures:

- Parents will enter in their vehicles on the Orange Avenue side of the school and proceed past the cafeteria to the back loop behind the secondary buildings.
- Parents are asked to stay in their vehicles and in the car line while screenings are being completed.
- FAMU Nursing will greet students in the vehicle line, at which time they will take temperatures and ensure students are wearing mask coverings.
- FAMU Nursing will escort students into the designated areas of the school.
- After the vision and hearing screenings are completed, students will be escorted back to their vehicles in the car line.

If you wish to bring your student for vision and hearing screenings, please see the below dates and time ranges for the required grade levels.

Kindergarten ~ Any time between 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
First Grade ~ Any time between 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Third Grade ~ Any time between 10:00 am – 11:30 pm
Sixth Grade ~ Any time between 11:30 am – 1:30 pm

FAMU DRS is putting a hold on the "Uniform Exchange Program"

Until further notice, FAMU DRS is putting a hold on the "Uniform Exchange Program" due to the COVID-19 situation.

Traditionally, parents would drop uniforms to the ESE Department as a donation, or fill out a "Uniform Exchange Form" to receive items for their student at the cost of $1. At this time we do not feel that we are confident enough to know that clothing that is received has been properly sanitized or laundered, nor do we have the ability to properly launder and sanitize - to COVID-19 standards - here on campus to safely distribute back to families.

United States Census Announcement/Memo

The Florida Commissioner of Education sent the following memo out to parents regarding the census.
The United States Census occurs every ten years and has a powerful impact on the future of Florida communities and their voice in Congress. The United States Census Bureau has announced that they will complete counting throughout the United States on September 30th. It is critical that the Florida education community take this brief survey as it directly benefits Florida students and families and informs the amount of federal funding distributed to states for programs that impact schools, students, and families.

Data from the 2020 Census will impact federal funding for programs that supports students in low-income areas of the state, services for students with disabilities, career and technical education programs, adult education, and many other programs important to the education of students in Florida. Census data informs federal funding for sanitization and personal protection equipment (PPE), cleaning supplies and other materials needed to help combat COVID-19 in schools.

We hope you encourage your education families, neighbors, and communities to participate in the census by sharing this message.

County Institutes Curfew at Request of Law Enforcement

By request of law enforcement, Leon County will institute a curfew effective from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Wednesday (September 2) and continuing each day until Tuesday (September 8) morning.

Due in part to recent violence during protests and demonstrations in Leon County, and out of an abundance of caution, Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil requested the countywide curfew in an effort to prevent further violence and unrest. With the request of the curfew, Sheriff McNeil intends to maintain an individual’s rights to peaceful and lawful protest while ensuring the protection of everyone’s safety and help first responders maintain peace.

During the curfew, County residents should remain home; individuals may go to and from work, seek healthcare or emergency veterinary care, or walk a pet on their premises.

"While we respect the right of individuals to peacefully protest, our first obligation remains ensuring the safety of our community," said Leon County Commission Chairman Bryan Desloge.

A proclamation establishing the curfew will be posted on the Leon County Emergency Information Portal ( shortly. Additionally, the proclamation is attached to this news release.

FAMU DRS New Start Date - August 31, 2020

This revised start date is necessary to ensure we are well prepared to receive our students, accommodate our staff and faculty, and continue to adhere to the recommended safety guidelines and procedures as recommended from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Parents Choose Instructional Platform with Commitment Form

Parents/Guardians with students enrolled in FAMU DRS must sign the semester-by-semester commitment form - due at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester (or at the time of enrollment if new to FAMU DRS).
The deadline for parent commitment forms, originally due on Friday, July 10, has been extended. The forms are now due on Friday, July 17. We urge you to complete and submit the requested information by the deadline. This will help us provide adequate educational and health resources for our community.
