Course Description
African American History focuses on the study of Ancient African History and modern African American history. Since the state of Florida does not have set standards for the subject of African American History as a course, this class will use standards 33 from World History, United States History, American Government, and Sociology from CPALMS Standards. This is a mixed grade social science course. The primary focus of the course will be introduction to ancient African history, medieval African City-States, Pre-colonial to Americas through antebellum 1850’s America to the Civil war and reconstruction. An in-depth investigation of historical events and periods, the fostering of multicultural awareness, the recognition of ethical, civic, and democratic values present in American history, and the development of a historical perspective in relation to contemporary events represent the major aspects of the course. Literature, music art, primary readings, videos, simulations and other activities will be used to enhance the subject.
