Why did our country battle itself? In this BrainPOP movie, Tim and Moby will teach you about the two major issues that led to the Civil War — slavery and states’ rights. Learn about the key issues that made the Confederate states feel that they needed to secede from the rest of the United States, as well as how the northern Union states felt about these issues. You’ll also find out how newly formed states fell into the slavery/states’ rights equation, and why some of the established states sided with the North on some issues, while siding with the South on others.
The Civil War was a major event in our history — watch the movie to understand wy it happened!
Then complete the quiz, which is due by 11:59 PM on May 20th.
Remember, late Bell Ringers will not be graded.

Andrew Jackson created a policy called Indaim Removal, which forced the indigenous, Native American tribes from Florida and other territories off of their homelands. He used soldiers to make them move west in a cruel march over several months and this became known as the Trail of Tears. This Indian Removal policy was created so that white men could claim the land for themselves.
Andrew Jackson also created an idea called Jacksonian Democracy, where white men who did not own property got the right to vote, which did not happen before he became 7th president of the United States. Before Jackson became president, only wealthy white men who owned land could vote.

Hello, Students,
It was so nice to see you all this morning in Mrs. Hobbs' Zoom class!
I miss each one of you, and I am so happy that I got to share some haiku poems with you today about science, social distancing, and the ones that I wrote for Mrs. Hobbs and the FAMU DRS teachers for Teacher Appreciation Week.
Now, your challenge is to create a poem of your own for Mrs. Hobbs for Teacher Appreciation Week.
(email your poems to Grandma C at [email protected])
It can be a haiku poem (line 1 = 5 syllables, line 2 = 7 syllables, line 3 = 5 syllables)
an acrostic poem (using a word or name to create the poem),
or any other kind of poem with words that rhyme or words that don't rhyme.
Please turn your poem in here as Google Doc or Google Slide so the Mrs. Hobbs can read it.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Love,

Hi Friends!
Thank you such much for hanging out with me for Wacky Wednesday! Is was SO MUCH FUN!
TODAY'S WACKY WEDNESDAY WINNER is....
DAJAN!
Congratulations, Dajan! Your $5 e-gift card is on the way!
I will be sending it to your parent today.
EARTH DAY
I was SUPER HAPPY to spend Earth Day with each of you!
Click on the first link below to play the Google Doodle video and game that we watched. :)
YOU ARE SUPER-SMART SCIENTISTS!
Thank you for sharing your observations on
- how pollution happens here on our planet, and
- what we can do to prevent pollution.
TODAY'S EARTH DAY EXPERIMENT: "Pollution in a Jar!"
For our first experiment this morning, we made smog!
Below is a video for that experiment, showing how smog is formed in the environment.
It's cool how the scientist in the video used data to tell the story of pollution in Beijing, China! Did you know that Beijing is the capital city of China? HINT: Be sure to remember that!
TRY IT!
Watch the video to learn how you can make smog at home with stuff from around your house!
REMEMBER:
Be sure to get permission from your parent! Have an adult help you make the smog since we have to use a lighter or match to create it.
TODAY'S ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT:
After talling about the different types of pollution in our environment,
we did a quick
FAVORITE THINGS SCAVENGER HUNT.
Using DATA from the items that each of you GATHERED,
we made OBSERVATIONS about the types of objects that you COLLECTED.
After discussing the types of items, we then ANALYZED TRENDS
and INTERPRETED the DATA.
This DATA TOLD A STORY about what our favorite things are made of,
and what IMPACT they have on the ENVIRONMENT!
NATIONAL JELLY BEAN DAY!
"What Happens to Jelly Beans in Different Solvents?"
Since it's also National Jelly Bean Day, we started an experiment using solutes (solids) and solvents (liquids).
Below is a link to the "What's the Matter?" video to help you remember the three states of matter. You also need to know the difference between a solute and a solvent.
VOCABULARY WORDS:
matter
solid
liquid
gas
solvent
solute
TODAY'S ASSIGNMENT:
1) Use the google form below to type your predictions of what will happen to the four jelly beans that we placed in the jars! PLEASE NOTE: There are three correct choices for each question, but the quiz will only let you choose one answer. As long as you choose one of the three possible correct choices then you will receive credit for your answer.
I had an awesome time celebrating Earth Day and National Jelly Bean Day with you smarties!
(((Sending you virtual hugs always!)))
Love,
Mrs. Hobbs :)

To log in, enter your student ID and password. The password is FAMU1234 (FAMU is in all caps, and there are NO spaces).
NEXT:
Go to My Assignments and click on "April 16, 2020 Assgigment - Interpreting Data: Data & Graphs"
This video shows how to take different types/pieces of information (data) and turn it into a graph. This is an important skill! Graphs help people understand information better by communicating information through a picture. Watch the video as many times as you need to. It will help you with the At-Home Scavenger Hunt Project that you will complete next week.
DATA TRENDS
We used some data from students' At-Home Scavenger Hunt items to create a spreadsheet during our Zoom Room makeup session on Thursday. If you click on the spreadsheet, you can see interpret and see trends in the data. What types of information is repeated? What things are happening most or least? What things are soft? What things are made of plastic? What things are the same color? What things are electronic? All of these are data trends.
LAST:
Write one paragraph each using your summarizing skills to interpret each of the four graphs.
Please remember to use correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation and grammar for your paragraph responses.

Scientists must be strong writers!
Scientists have to prove their experiments by observing, collecting, and recording data.
Then, they have to interpret (analyze, prove, and write about) their findings to help people understand the results of those experiments.
While reading your sentences and paragraphs, I see that several students need practice on:
1) Identifying sentence fragments (incomplete thoughts), and
2) Understanding how to express a complete thought when writing sentences
This will help strengthen your writing skills!

Some students have only been watching the video or doing part of the work.
TO EARN A GRADE, you MUST complete ALL three parts of the Bell Ringer.

Hi, Students!
Thanks to those of you who have been completing your Study Island practice on "Interpreting Data."
You will be assessed on this skill.
Tomorrow during our Zoom session, we will:
- Go over some of the questions that most students are struggling with.
- Play a live game to help students practice as a group.
However, some students have not completed any Study Island practice at all,
or have not taken the time to do additional practice if they have not consistently earned a mastery score
(80% or higher, more times than you earned a score that is below mastery).
If students to not do their practice, then I can only use the information that I have from students who have been doing the work to decide which questions we should spend time on tomorrow.
Please remember to take your time, reading both your lesson and each question closely and carefully.
Be sure to consider each answer before you choose the best possible one.
